By Rosie Robinson (Ed) (Global Sustainability Institute, Anglia Ruskin) and Nicola Spurling (Contributor)

In 2013 I took part in Rosie Robinson’s book project which provided a space for early career researchers to write about the sustainability questions which were at the forefront of their minds at the time.
This innovative book involved researchers from across disciplines, and was written and illustrated with a public audience in mind. It has been freely available since it was published, and was circulated to a broad audience inviting them to engage with the range of issues that it raised.
In my contribution I explore the question of how unsustainable ways of life are made and remade on a daily basis, and especially the role that professions such as urban and transport planning have in perpetuating the status quo; I suggest that in a context of climate change many modelling tools, planning guidelines and standards are no longer fit for purpose. These issues were the focus of my work from 2014 until 2020.
